Key Largo itinerary scene

4-day / 3-night itinerary

Three nights in Key Largo: reef, mangroves, and bay sunsets

Arrive beside Florida Bay, reserve the clearest day for the reef, explore mangrove water next, and keep departure morning flexible.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Three nights separate reef water, mangrove shallows, and the marina shoreline instead of compressing them into one long day.

Best length

4 days / 3 nights

Three nights allow two different full water days without forcing an offshore reef trip into poor conditions.

Stay

Reefhouse Resort

Waterfront guestrooms and suites have private bay-facing balconies within a 17-acre resort with a private beach, spa, heated pool, and marina.

Main activity

the reef, Florida Bay, and one unhurried marina evening

Use one full day for the Atlantic reef and another for Florida Bay, mangroves, and the marina shoreline.

Trip shape

Reef day, bay day, flexible morning

Keep Atlantic and Florida Bay outings on separate days, with one shore-side option ready for wind or thunderstorms.

Arrival

Check in, meet Florida Bay, and eat near the marina.

Reach Key Largo before sunset if possible. Check the next morning's operator message, then keep dinner close to the room.

4:00 PM

Day 2

Take the clearest suitable forecast window offshore.

Choose snorkeling, diving, or a glass-bottom cruise according to the group's comfort in open water and current conditions.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to shore and leave the afternoon unscheduled.

After the sun, salt, and boat motion, spend the afternoon at the pool, in the room, or on a short marina walk before dinner.

Day 3

Mangrove creeks, Florida Bay, and a sunset shoreline.

Choose a small-boat naturalist outing or paddle on the bay side, where mangrove roots, seagrass, birds, and shallow water replace the offshore reef.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return for shade, then watch sunset from the western shoreline.

Keep the hottest hours light and return to the waterline for sunset rather than adding another long drive.

Departure

Keep the last morning short and flexible.

Walk a hardwood hammock trail, paddle protected water, visit Pennekamp's visitor center, or take a final marina breakfast before U.S. 1.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Choose breakfast, coffee, or a short walk near the exit route.

Eat near the room and check northbound traffic before adding one last stop.
